About Masashi Kaijin -

The blade's core is made from hard VS1 steel clad in softer stainless steel. Through a special heat-treating process, Masashi-san can make VS1 incredibly hard, giving it edge retention on par with high-end carbon steel. He sharpens blades in a unique way, making the back end more robust for chopping and the tip more precise for delicate work.

The textured appearance of the Kaijin gives its name, which translates to ‘ash’ and references the traditional forging process Masashi uses. Normally blacksmiths must overheat the knife to achieve this sort of finish, which can tamper with the knife’s quality, but Masashi-san is able to do it in a controlled, low-temperature way that doesn’t affect the steel.

First training with his brother at Yoshikane, then striking out on his own, Masashi Yamamoto relentlessly pursues the creation of a perfect knife using the traditional techniques passed down in his family and augmented by a modern understanding of metallurgy. He’s also a certified badass, forging in flip-flops and lighting cigarettes off red-hot steel like an 80’s action hero.

This 135mm Petty Kaijin is

"This 135mm Petty Kaijin is a work of art by Masashi. I feel blessed to get one. Every aspect of the knife is executed flawlessly. I love the blade's ash finish, taper and handle. I use it very often. It is incredibly sharp and slices any vegetable as thin as I want. Really great communication and fast shipping."

Sharp and light, impressed by the VS1 steel

"It's my first Masashi and I'm very impressed by the VS1. It's very sharp out of the box, doesn't dull easily and it's easy to manipulate. Perfect for both light vegetable work and meat."

Worth the Wait

"Second Japanese kitchen knife, first Musashi blade. Sold out in January, I was miffed at myself. Called the store when social media said they were getting more. The nice lady who picked up the phone confirmed the 135mm petty was in the shipment. So I raided the knife fund. The whole thing is a work of art. The variegated chestnut handle has an almost holographic effect, set off from the blade by the dark collar. The blade itself reflects light in different ways, depending on which part of the surface you look at. As for how it handles, this has become my new favorite for daily things. The balance is just behind the heel of the blade, forward of the collar, perfect for a totally neutral pinch grip. Even if that weren't the case, the kaijin finish provides a positive purchase on the blade that sticks to your fingers without being tacky. A higher grip to peel or lower grip all on the handle, it's like a good twig, it'll do what I ask no problem. The edge is sharp enough to shave-my arm, that is-no irritation whatsoever. I delight in being able to be ever more precise the more I use it. It'll go through an apple as if the skin weren't even there. I've cut slices so thin they're translucent and quite flexible, so garnish work'll be a breeze. Excised the occasional brown spot with the tip as if it was a craft knife. Took on a wedge of Toscano cheese almost perfectly. Small hesitation on the rind, but not enough to deflect the edge. The rest was taken care of with no more than a couple dozen cracker sized cuts. There's been a slight patina developing between the hamon line and the kaijin finish, that has more to do with me not wiping it off for a half hour or so, it's a slight greyish darkening, only visible directly overhead. Only problem, I now have to save up for that matching gyuto and honesuki."

Sharp, comfortable, and great finish

"This is my first Japanese style knife and I’m hopeful that many more are to come! I bought it in-store in Vancouver and had an amazing experience the staff showed me options, and gave advice, but let me make be decision for myself - it was great! This knife is crazy sharp and comfortable to use. Would recommend!"

Slicy & Sexy!

"Awesome knife! Not only it's the sharpest knife i own but look how good it look! Perfect size for small job on the cutting board but also great in the hand! The wood of the handle is gorgeous and the blade sharpness is perfect out of the box. VS1 semi-stainless steel doesn't rust/patina easily compared to more traditional carbon steels. Now i need more Masashi Kaijin knives!"
